Learning First Nations languages is a valuable way for both First Nations and non-First Nations students to develop a strong sense of identity, pride, and self-esteem. This helps to strengthen their overall well-being and engagement in their learning.
First Nations language programs are a vital means of building respect for First Nations histories, cultures, people, knowledge, and experiences among students, families, school staff, and the broader community.
There are numerous First Nations languages and dialects, many of which are endangered. An endangered language is at risk of becoming obsolete, primarily because it has few remaining speakers. If a language loses all of its native speakers, it becomes extinct.
Australia has more than 250 Indigenous languages, including approximately 800 dialects. Languages are living entities that connect people to their Country, culture, and ancestors. At Freckled Frog, we have chosen to represent languages from various regions throughout Australia, using approved words and consulting with First Nations Land Councils.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters, with special acknowledgment to the custodians of the languages used on our blocks: Tiwi, Pintupi, Gudjal, Noongar, Bunganditj, and Awabakal.
Each set includes 26 pieces, with each block measuring approximately 4 x 4 x 4cm. The blocks are made with FSC Beechwood and are suitable for children aged 1 year and over.
