Heuristic play was a term coined in the early 80’s by child psychologist Elinor Goldschmeid. Heuristic play describes the activity of babies and children as they play with and explore the properties of everyday ‘objects’. These ‘objects’ cn vary but incorporate a range of textures, or sounds. Babies naturally explore these items with their hands and mouth, so supervision is always required with heuristic play baskets.
The Growing Kind Heuristic Play basket includes a 25cm can basket, white cotton handkerchief, acacia wood spoon, 15cm beechwood scoop, wooden egg and cup, natural dolly peg, loofah sponge and large paint brush. Our heuristic play basket can be introduced from the time your baby can sit up independently, however must only ever be used under direct supervision. As your baby explores each item, you can describe the textures or sounds to them. Gradually add to your heuristic basket with everyday objects such as keys, spoons, bells or fabric.
