‘Rainbow Rice Flakes’: a step-by-step guide

Rainbow Rice Flakes are a relatively simple sensory experience that is ideal for beginners. Rice Flakes also provide a gluten free alternative to oats.

?What you will need:

  • Rice Flakes (available from the health food isle at supermarkets)
  • Colouring (you can opt for store brought food colouring, natural colouring or make your own)
  • Vinegar
  • A leak-proof container
  • A tray for playing in (the Kmart round drinks tray is perfect for this #kmartplaytray)



  1. Add 1 cup of dry rice flakes to the container
  2. Pour in 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 4 drops of colouring (for vibrant colours add more)
  3. Place the lid on the container and shake until all flakes are coloured
  4. Pour into your #kmartplaytray
  5. Rinse the container
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 using different colours



  • add essential oils for scented rice flakes (lavender, orange and mint give great scents)
  • hide different figurines or letter magnets so that your rice flakes can form a treasure hunt
  • Use your rice flakes as a natural and taste safe confetti for craft projects
  • Create a sensory bottle out of your rice flakes
