2019 & Taking Control

I have a question for you…

When was the last time you really thought about your emotions? Aside from the – “gosh I’m tired today”, or, “I’m feeling ok today”.

Was it today? Was it within the last month? The last 6 months?

Emotional Check In

Before using essential oils, I couldn’t remember the answer. I couldn’t remember the last time I really connected with how I was feeling.

Fast forward over a year and connecting with how I feel is part of my daily routine.

I have completely taken control of my emotions.

When I wake up in the morning and use my Peppermint, it’s because I’ve noted that I feel a bit disinterested, a bit bored, a bit tired.

When I apply Lavender and Spearmint to my body after a shower with some unscented moisturiser – it’s because I’m not communicating how I feel.

When I apply Ylang Ylang and Bergamot to my body at night time – it’s because I need to be more accepting of myself and tap into that inner playfulness and spontaneity.

When I choose Citrus Bliss, Passion and Lemon for the diffuser, it’s because I’m not feeling creative and there’s something blocking me.

You see? It’s everywhere.

I’m listening to my body and to my emotions to tell me what I need.

It doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Essential oils aren’t complicated. You just need someone to guide you on how to use them. If you are already using essential oils, then you can read my blog post here with some great recipes to help you take control of your emotions.

No clue what essential oils are? That’s ok. Here is a really quick run-down on how they can support you (and your kids), emotionally:

What are they? I want you to picture an orange (i.e. the fruit) growing out in the wild. In its rind are compounds that protect it because it’s not human; it can’t turn on a fan if it’s hot or cover itself with a blanket if it’s cold. It relies on its compound to repel pests, attract bees, etc. Then we apply some heat and some pressure, we extract those compounds, pop them in a little brown bottle and put a dōTERRA sticker on it. Yep. It’s that simple. If you’ve smelt Wild Orange before, you’ll know how incredible it is – just like you’ve held a fresh orange in your hand. You can read more about essential oils here.

How do they support us emotionally? Every single one of our emotions has a charge. The positive or negative energy that is generated by our emotions has a considerable impact on our bodies.  For example, the body’s release of serotonin, dopamine, or oxytocin results in an uplifting emotion and positive sensation in the body. An experience of stress causes the brain to instruct the release of cortisol, and the body’s response will be one of urgency and perhaps even fear.

Essential oils can facilitate a rapid emotional response in the brain and the body to facilitate a release. They are powerful biochemical agents for emotional balance, wellness, and toxic release, which can be paired or partnered with any holistic or medically-derived program to create a successful approach to mental and emotional wellness.

Why is this important? Well, like I said… it’s important to think about how we are feeling not only from an emotional wellbeing perspective, but so that we can in turn teach our kids mindfulness and self-awareness. That they too, can be in control of their emotions. That they have tools available to them to support themselves through emotional periods.

Where to next? Well, if you have essential oils, go and make a blend, or put on your diffuser, or apply some oils to your skin with unscented moisturizer or fractionated coconut oil. You can thank me later!

Not sure where to even begin? That’s ok, try one of my epic sleep recipes below:
